2013-12-11 Update: Since publishing this article, Hostamania announced a partnership with cPanel in order to provide the popular hosting platform and control panel to their customers. Their hosting plans have also been completely updated and are now a little bit more competitive by offering unlimited domain hosting and transfer. Read the official press release for details.
I was once a huge wrestling fan. I would religiously sit in front of the television every Sunday morning to watch the live WWF event (or so I thought it was broadcasted live). Who remembers the rubber wrestling figures from the 80′s? That was some cool stuff. My favourite wrestler back then was the Ultimate Warrior. I liked Hulk Hogan a lot too but you were lucky if you got to see him on those weekly wrestling TV shows as he’d mostly appear in major events only. My passion for wrestling soon faded out as realized they weren’t fighting for real. That was 30 years ago. I was 9 years old.

In the years that followed, professional wrestling lost some of its popularity for a while as the 80′s were fading away through the 90′s. Terry Gene Bollea was then relegated to the less prestigious WCW and renamed himself Hollywood Hulk Hogan before returning to the WWE a few years later. Since then, he also made various TV and movie stints while making several strange endorsements such as the Hulk Hogan Ultimate Grill and the Hulk Hogan Thunder Mixer.
A few weeks ago, a partnership between Hulk Hogan and Tech Assets was announced to launch the new Hostamania web hosting service. Tech Assets is a web hosting industry veteran which currently owns a handful of brands such as Jumpline, wpZilla and Christian Web Host among others.
Although the new Hostamania service was not ready yet, the company still managed to make itself known with their viral video of Hulk Hogan riding a wrecking ball in a thong:
The video also takes a shot at competitor Go Daddy, who happens to have hired action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme to star in their latest advertisement campaign:
The new commercial is part of GoDaddy’s move to step away from the raciness of past ads featuring the sexy and controversial GoDaddy Girls.
Hostamania went live a few days ago, finally revealing their hosting plans, much to my deception. Hostamania is not providing web hosting services in it’s truest form at all. All you can do is create your website using their online website building software. Forget about uploading your existing website to Hostamania’s servers. Forget about installing WordPress or you favorite shopping cart. It won’t happen.
The best you can do is to build a static website. With the average hosting plan for personal and small business websites averaging $3.95 per month for unlimited hosting, “Hogan’s Choice” is way overpriced at $10 per month with a limit of 10 web pages and 250mb of storage (oh, and you get one stock photo!). Don’t be fooled by the “world-champion site builder”. Every major hosting company provides you with one (if not multiple) website building applications and hundreds of free templates to choose from.
Since Hostamania took a shot at its rival GoDaddy, let’s see how each other’s hosting plans compare:
|Disk Space||1 GB||10 GB||50 GB||0.1 GB||0.25 GB||Unlimited|
|Bandwidth||150 GB||500 GB||1000 GB||?||?||?|
|Website Templates||50||300||300||5||15||All (?)|
|Money Back Guarantee|
It’s important to note that we compared GoDaddy’s Website Builder plans here but they do offer many more advanced hosting services such as shared website hosting (which also includes a website builder), VPS hosting and dedicated servers. If you ever need to upgrade, which is likely to happen if you run a business website, you may want to consider this.
Perhaps some people will disagree with me but I don’t see much use for turn-key hosting services where you don’t get a fully-featured hosting service (especially when it’s more expensive). What you end up paying for is the website builder itself, not really the hosting service. For personal websites, there are plenty of free and reliable services out there such as WordPress.com and Blogger.
But what if you’re not a blogger? In this case you may want to take a look at the excellent website builder and hosting service from Wix.com which is 100% free. It is way more powerful than Hostmania and it offers a lot more features and templates. May you need more resources than what the free plan has to offer, you can always upgrade to one of their Premium packages.
On the other hand, if you’re running a small business website (and you’re serious about it), you can get a fully-featured hosting plan from $1.99 per month. Hire a web designer and/or a web developer to create a professional logo and website with the money you’ll save (think long term). It may not cost you as much as you’d think to build a small website with only a few pages.
Want to run an ecommerce site instead? There are plenty of great turn-key ecommerce hosting services such as BigCommerce and Volusion where you can setup a fully transactional online store with little to no technical knowledge.
With that being said, unless you’re a hardcore Hulk Hogan fan, there are plenty of better options for you, brother.
Van Damme can keep playing those bongos safely.
